On the last Friday of June, I have presented my work to the HDR cohort as part of the monthly group critique session.
I have used the opportunity to lay out all the work (some in progress) that I have produced during the first third of my PhD candidature.
The feedback I received from colleagues was generous and generative, and I feel an immense sense of appreciation for it.
Some of the key points that emerged during the cold read phase of the session:
- the works seem to be reflective of time/registering time in the stitches
- there is a deep sense of histories embedded in the materiality of the works
- stitches evoke sensory experiences and emotional responses
- preoccupation with labour and low impact read as anti-capitalist
- attending to alienated labour through laborious application of stitches is interesting
- 'framing' using textile offcuts works as a method of reclamation and challenging the systems of value (of art materials/disciplines)
