This post documents the initial processes behind one of the experimental works I made leading up to the start of my PhD project.
Interested in ways of transforming discarded textiles with minimal ecological impact, I attempted developing some natural dyes as means of making some painterly marks. This process also seemed to correspond with my intention to reclaim the domestic environment that has informed my practice during recent pandemic as well as its context in which women in my family have extensively worked with textiles.
After having folded a discarded men's shirt I made some initial marks using turmeric and beetroot dyes.

I then applied some patches of bra lace offcuts using repetitive cross stitches.
